France’s communications infrastructure has been targeted by vandalism amid the ongoing Paris 2024 Olympics. The French government reports significant damage to fiber optic cables and both fixed and mobile phone lines, impacting telecommunications across several regions.
The full extent of the disruption and its impact on Olympic events remains unclear. This incident follows arson attacks on the train network just hours before the Games’ opening ceremony.
Marina Ferrari, Secretary of State for Digital Affairs, announced on X (formerly Twitter) that vandalism from Sunday night to Monday morning disrupted services for telecom operators, including Bouygues, Free, and SFR. The government has launched a national investigation into these incidents, including last week’s train sabotage that affected nearly a million passengers.
French police have reported that at least six administrative departments were affected, including the Marseille region, which is hosting Olympic soccer and sailing events. While train services have mostly resumed, no arrests have been made in connection to the recent attacks, although an extreme-left activist was detained in a separate incident.
