The NFL community is mourning the loss of former Baltimore Ravens defensive lineman Arthur Jones, who passed away Friday morning at the age of 39. His alma mater, Syracuse University, confirmed the news, though no cause of death has been disclosed.
A Key Figure in Baltimore’s Super Bowl Run
Jones, selected in the fifth round of the 2010 NFL Draft, quickly made his mark with the Ravens. His breakout came during the 2012 and 2013 seasons, where he recorded 8.5 of his 10 career sacks. His most memorable performance came in Super Bowl XLVII, when Baltimore defeated San Francisco. Jones not only sacked quarterback Colin Kaepernick just before the infamous Superdome blackout, but also recovered a fumble, helping secure the Ravens’ championship.
Remembered for His Spirit and Character
Tributes poured in from former coaches and teammates. Ravens general manager Eric DeCosta praised Jones for his “bright smile, infectious energy, and eternal positivity,” while head coach John Harbaugh described him as “a remarkable person, a relentless worker, and someone any coach would be proud to lead.” Harbaugh added that Jones’ “generous spirit and radiant smile” left an enduring impression both in the locker room and throughout the Baltimore community.
Beyond the Ravens
Following his four-year stint in Baltimore, Jones went on to play two seasons with the Indianapolis Colts before finishing his career with Washington in 2017.
At Syracuse, Jones established himself as one of the program’s all-time great defensive linemen. He set a school record for tackles for loss by an interior lineman (38.5) and earned first-team All-Big East honors in his final two seasons.
“Arthur Jones was a tremendous player and even better person,” said Syracuse athletic director John Wildhack. “He continued to support our program after his NFL career, inspiring many young athletes with his uplifting spirit.”
A Family of Champions
Jones was the older brother of UFC legend Jon Jones and NFL defensive end Chandler Jones, a four-time Pro Bowler who won a Super Bowl with the New England Patriots. Together, the Jones family became one of the most decorated families in professional sports.
Arthur Jones leaves behind a legacy defined not only by his championship moments on the field, but also by the warmth, resilience, and joy he brought to everyone around him.
