The Motion Picture Association (MPA), the leading trade group representing film and television studios, has welcomed Amazon Prime Video and MGM Studios as its newest members. This addition marks a significant enhancement to the MPA’s collective voice in the entertainment policy landscape, joining an impressive roster that includes Paramount Pictures, Sony Pictures, Universal Studios, The Walt Disney Studios, Warner Bros. Discovery, and Netflix.
Charles Rivkin, chairman and CEO of the MPA, expressed enthusiasm about the new membership, stating, “The MPA is the global voice for a growing and evolving industry. Welcoming Prime Video and Amazon MGM Studios to our ranks will broaden our collective policymaking and content protection efforts on behalf of our most innovative and creative companies. MPA studios fuel local economies, drive job creation, enrich cultures, and bolster communities everywhere they work. With Prime Video and Amazon MGM Studios among our roster of extraordinary members, the MPA will have an even larger voice for the world’s greatest storytellers.”
The MPA plays a crucial role in advocating for its members on various issues, including copyright and intellectual property protections, anti-piracy efforts, and production incentives. The inclusion of Amazon and MGM is expected to strengthen the organization’s influence in these areas, particularly as the industry faces increasing challenges from digital piracy and evolving public policy dynamics.
Mike Hopkins, head of Prime Video and Amazon MGM Studios, highlighted the company’s commitment to supporting storytellers while promoting a robust entertainment ecosystem. “Amazon’s mission is to entertain customers around the world with compelling film and television. In order to do that, we must support storytellers, while also helping to sustain a robust entertainment industry that works for both studios and our creative partners,” he stated. “We are proud to join the MPA and its member studios in their collective efforts to protect creators, content, and consumers worldwide.”
Amazon has a history of collaboration with the MPA, having served as a governing board member of the MPA’s anti-piracy group, the Alliance for Creativity and Entertainment (ACE), since 2017. MGM previously held membership in the MPA from 1928 to 2005, making this a significant return to the organization.
As the entertainment landscape continues to evolve, the MPA’s expansion with Amazon and MGM underscores the ongoing commitment to fostering a thriving and sustainable industry that supports both creators and audiences alike. With their combined resources and influence, the MPA is poised to tackle the challenges of the digital age, ensuring a vibrant future for storytelling across all platforms.
