Justine Bateman, known for her work as an actress, writer, and filmmaker, has voiced strong opposition to the recent tentative agreement reached by SAG-AFTRA, particularly in relation to its provisions concerning generative AI. She has urged union members to reject the deal if they wish to continue working in the industry without the risk of being replaced by synthetic objects created by AI. Bateman emphasized her commitment to traditional filmmaking practices and her refusal to use generative AI in her work.
She criticized studio executives for what she perceives as a disregard for the human element in film and television production, expressing disappointment in the SAG leadership and committee for not addressing her concerns regarding AI issues. Bateman highlighted the potential negative impact of using generative AI on the structure of the entertainment business and urged actors and crew members to stand up for their rights.
In response to Bateman’s comments, Grey’s Anatomy actor Jason George elaborated on some of the AI clauses in SAG-AFTRA’s agreement, emphasizing the importance of consent and the limitations on using digital replicas instead of human actors.
The article also mentions the significant financial impact of the strike and the decision to close the deal with AI protections, despite the ongoing concerns raised by industry professionals.
This revised version provides a concise summary of the main issues discussed in the original article, capturing the essence of Justine Bateman’s challenges to the SAG-AFTRA deal over AI provisions.
