Duchess Meghan showcased her fluency in Spanish during an appearance in her and Prince Harry’s new Netflix docuseries Polo, which premiered on December 10. The five-episode series follows professional polo players as they prepare for the 2024 U.S. Open Polo Championship. Meghan and Harry served as executive producers through their company, Archewell Productions.
In one scene, Meghan and Harry attend the April 2024 Royal Salute Polo Challenge, a special event benefiting Harry’s charity, Sentebale. While meeting Argentinian polo player Adolfo Cambiaso, Meghan greets him in Spanish, prompting Harry to proudly announce, “She’s fluent in Spanish.” The two then engage in a conversation in Spanish, with Meghan mentioning her time living in Buenos Aires two decades ago, specifically in the Palermo Viejo and Las Cañitas neighborhoods.
She also shares her love for Argentina’s May 25 national holiday, Día de la Revolución de Mayo, which commemorates the first independent government established in Buenos Aires. Cambiaso responds positively, recognizing the connection to the local polo fields.
Meghan’s Spanish proficiency dates back to her internship at the U.S. Embassy in Buenos Aires in the early 2000s and was further developed during her study abroad in Madrid. While her language skills are not widely known, she had the opportunity to showcase them publicly in August during a trip to Colombia, where she delivered opening remarks entirely in Spanish at a summit for Afro-Colombian women.
Her language skills and cultural appreciation continue to resonate in her public appearances, reflecting her deep connection to the countries she has visited.
