Apple Makes Adjustments to Apple Watches Amid Patent Dispute

A significant development has emerged in the ongoing Apple Watch saga, stemming from a patent dispute with medical device maker Masimo over the use of blood oxygen sensors in the Apple Watch Series 9 and Watch Ultra 2 models.

As of the latest reports, it appears that Apple is planning to remove the blood oxygen sensors from these two models to avoid potential import bans. While no official statement has been released by regulators or Apple, a letter from Masimo suggests that these changes are likely to be implemented and that Masimo is in agreement with them.

Initially, Apple responded promptly by removing these models from both its physical and online stores just before the ban was set to take effect on December 26th, 2023. However, the absence of these models was short-lived. Apple contested the decision and obtained a temporary suspension of the ban, allowing the company to continue sales in the U.S. while awaiting a review by the U.S. Customs and Border Protection.

The decision to eliminate the blood oxygen feature from these models reflects Apple’s efforts to navigate the legal landscape and address the patent issues. However, the potential impact of this change on current Apple Watch Series 9 and Watch Ultra 2 owners remains uncertain, with concerns about a possible update that could compromise the functionality of the feature.”
