Jordan Heading, a versatile guard known for his skills, has made headlines by opting out of the Gilas Pilipinas lineup despite initial expectations.

Set to join Strong Group-Philippines for the upcoming 43rd William Jones Cup, the Filipino-Australian sharpshooter clarified his reasons for declining an invitation to participate in the FIBA Olympic Qualifying Tournament (OQT) with Gilas Pilipinas.

Citing personal matters, Heading disclosed that he and his wife have been undergoing fertility treatments, which clashed with the timing of Gilas’ call-up. Despite being approached by Gilas head coach Tim Cone to step in for the injured Scottie Thompson, Heading explained, “Unfortunately, the call came at the last minute, right in the middle of our fertility treatment cycle, making it impossible for me to leave.”

Expressing regret over the timing, Heading emphasized his efforts to try to make it work with Gilas but acknowledged the logistical challenges. “I did everything I could to accommodate Gilas’ request, but the timing just wasn’t feasible,” he stated.

Despite this setback, Heading remains hopeful about future opportunities with the national team. “I hope they will still consider me for future windows,” he commented optimistically. “Hopefully, we can work something out.”

Family remains Heading’s top priority, as he conveyed to coach Tim Cone, “If it were any other circumstance, I would have made it happen, but family comes first.”

Recognizing the personal sacrifice of not being able to represent his country at the FIBA OQT, Heading expressed his full support for Gilas Pilipinas as they gear up to face Latvia and Georgia. “Best of luck, boys,” he encouraged them. “We’ll be cheering for you here in the Philippines.”

Reflecting on his previous contributions to Gilas, including the 2021 FIBA OQT and the 2023 FIBA World Cup Asian Qualifiers, Heading reaffirmed his dedication to Philippine basketball.

Despite his current absence, Jordan Heading’s commitment to family and his unwavering support for Gilas Pilipinas highlight his resilience and loyalty to the sport.
