Time magazine has entered into a significant partnership with OpenAI, led by Sam Altman, to broaden the accessibility of its extensive archive and current content through generative artificial intelligence products, including ChatGPT. This multi-year licensing agreement allows OpenAI to integrate Time’s 101-year archives into its AI platforms, ensuring that Time’s trusted journalism reaches global audiences via innovative digital tools.

Founded in 1923, Time has meticulously digitized its historical content, including covers and original issue scans, accessible through its Time Vault section. Despite transitioning away from a paywall model last year to focus on advertising revenue, Time maintains a robust print subscriber base exceeding 1.1 million.

Mark Howard, COO of Time, emphasized the magazine’s commitment to evolving alongside technology and expanding global access to trusted information through innovative partnerships. This collaboration follows OpenAI’s successful ventures with other leading media entities like The Atlantic, News Corp., The Daily Telegraph, and The Financial Times.

Brad Lightcap, COO of OpenAI, underscored the importance of supporting reputable journalism by ensuring proper attribution and accessibility through AI-driven tools. Time has already integrated AI features on Time.com, including Deep Dive for content recommendations and AI-generated audio versions of articles.

The partnership between Time and OpenAI marks a significant step forward in leveraging AI to enhance the dissemination and accessibility of journalism, reflecting both entities’ commitment to innovation in the media landscape.
