CNN’s Phil Mattingly Shifts to Chief Domestic Correspondent Role Amid Morning Show Cancellation

Following the cancellation of CNN This Morning, Phil Mattingly, a seasoned journalist, has been reassigned to a new role as the network’s chief domestic correspondent and anchor. In his new capacity, Mattingly will focus on delivering in-depth reporting and will serve as a fill-in host across various programs throughout the day.

Mattingly’s initial assignment will involve covering Donald Trump’s 2024 presidential campaign, along with appearances in convention programming and other significant political events slated for 2024.

Previously serving as co-anchor of CNN This Morning and having joined the program from the White House beat just a few months earlier, Mattingly’s transition underscores CNN’s strategic shift in programming. The decision to shutter the morning show, announced by new CNN CEO Mark Thompson, has prompted staff to seek new roles within the network.

Thompson expressed confidence in Mattingly’s abilities, citing his extensive experience covering political affairs as a correspondent during the 2016 campaign, Capitol Hill, and the White House. Mattingly’s appointment as CNN Anchor and Chief Domestic Correspondent aligns with the network’s commitment to delivering comprehensive coverage during a pivotal election cycle.

In addition to Mattingly’s role transition, CNN unveiled a collaboration with Politico to reintroduce its signature “Grills” at the Republican National Convention (RNC) and Democratic National Convention (DNC) later this year. Renamed the CNN-POLITICO Grill, the venue will serve as a gathering place for influential figures in government, journalism, and politics, fostering discussions and providing context around the 2024 election.

David Leavy, CNN’s COO, emphasized the significance of the CNN-POLITICO Grill in facilitating meaningful dialogues and capturing the essence of the upcoming election. Leveraging the combined expertise of CNN and POLITICO, the Grill aims to offer a compelling platform for understanding the critical issues facing the United States in the midst of an intense electoral landscape.
