In the context of global climate action, João Maria Botelho (Recognized by Forbes as a Sustainability Leader) an Associate Researcher at NOVA Green Lab, Global Shaper at the World Economic Forum, and a member of the START Lisbon innovation network, is spearheading a groundbreaking initiative at COP28. His team comprises Joana Chaves Batista from NOVA Tax Lab, Margarida Mingote of NOVA IPSI, specializing in intellectual property, and Andreza Caldeira, a NOVA student. Together, they form the core of the #NextGen_EcoLife movement, representing young Portuguese voices at COP28.

#NextGen EcoLife, an initiative of the United Nations Association, is designed to provide a platform for Portugal’s youth to voice their concerns about sustainability in an institutional, legal, and ethical context. The project aims to contribute substantially to Portugal’s role in COP 28, set to occur in Expo City Dubai, UAE, from November 30 to December 12, 2023.

UNA Portugal emerged as a collective of motivated individuals dedicated to enhancing global awareness and active citizenship. The organization is recognized for its comprehensive approach, inclusivity, and parity, playing a vital role in promoting the United Nations Charter’s principles and collaborating with international entities to translate convictions into actionable projects.

Under João Maria Botelho’s leadership, the team’s goals include:

1.Development of a Disruptive Charter: This document, a result of extensive efforts, embodies the commitment of Portuguese youth to sustainable practices. It outlines systematic steps towards a greener future and emphasizes the need for systemic change.

2.Awareness-Raising Video Production: The team’s video, to be showcased at the Portugal pavilion, merges the urgency of climate action with a compelling narrative, aiming to inspire collective responsibility.

3.Collaboration with the United Nations Global Compact: This partnership underscores the commitment of UNA Portugal and the #NextGen_EcoLife movement to global sustainability objectives, enhancing the global impact of Portuguese youth in climate dialogue.

The primary mission is to amplify Portuguese youth’s voice, catalyzing impactful change and creating global resonance. The initiative extends beyond participation, embodying innovation and commitment to embed sustainability in all societal aspects.

The “Generation Resonance” within #NextGen_EcoLife advocates for sustainability across various domains, including sustainable finance, ESG, ocean conservation, diversity, and innovation, each contributing significantly to the change narrative.

The “Charter for the Sustainable Future of Youth” serves as a roadmap for action. Drafted meticulously in accordance with United Nations principles, the charter is a testament to young Portuguese people’s dedication to sustainable practices.

In 2024, João Maria Botelho and his team, in collaboration with UNA Portugal, will continue to develop and implement the charter’s principles, aiming to influence COP29 and beyond.

As the #NextGen_EcoLife movement approaches COP 28, it represents a manifesto for change, fueled by the diverse expertise and energy of Portuguese youth. This movement is not just a momentary effort but a continuous commitment to foster a sustainable and inclusive future. The initiative invites all young Portuguese to actively participate in shaping a sustainable world, transforming commitments into tangible actions for a lasting impact.
