Democrats Are Trying the Costanza Strategy

Democrats need a new plan for 2028, argues the Opinion columnist Carlos Lozada in this round table from “The Opinions.”

The party has defined itself so fully as being against Trump that it sometimes has a hard time articulating what it’s for. It’s like it’s almost like Trump and Trumpism is the guide. Just whatever they do, I’m going to push against. It’s like Costanza: I will do the opposite. “If every instinct you have is wrong, then the opposite would have to be right.” “Yes, I will do the opposite.” I think part of the reason, for instance, that they didn’t do more on the border is that they felt they had to be completely opposite of what Trump had done, the performative cruelty against immigrants during his term. But they won’t be running against Trump in 2028, though. They’ll be running against some form of Trumpism.

Democrats need a new plan for 2028, argues the Opinion columnist Carlos Lozada in this round table from “The Opinions.”
